LeBron James has confirmed that he will return for the 21st NBA season.
The Lakers star announced the news on Wednesday night at the ESPYS in Los Angeles.
James, who turns 39 in December, said that he still loves the game of basketball and that he wants to continue to play at a high level.
"I don't care how many more points I score, or what I can or cannot do on the floor," James said. "The real question for me is: Can I play without cheating this game? The day I can't give everything on the floor is the day I'll be done. Lucky for you guys, that day is not today."
James also said that his children have inspired him to continue playing. His oldest son, Bronny, will be a freshman on the USC basketball team in the fall.
"You know what brings me back every year? It's watching and coaching my boys and their teammates," James said. "I see those kids and it brings me right back to why I play. Those kids get me back to where I need to be, just the pure love of his beautiful game."
James' announcement is a major boost for the Lakers, who are hoping to bounce back from a disappointing 2021-22 season.
The four-time MVP is still one of the best players in the NBA, and his return gives the Lakers a chance to contend for a championship next season.
