  • She is the country's worst baby serial killer in recent times.
  • Letby harmed babies in her care by injecting air into their blood and stomachs, overfeeding them with milk, physically assaulting them and poisoning them with insulin.

  • Her intention was to kill the babies while duping her colleagues into believing there was a natural cause of death, prosecutors argued.
  • Victims' families said they "may never truly know why this happened."
  • Letby will be sentenced at Manchester Crown Court on August 21.

Lucy Letby, 33, was found guilty of seven counts of murder and six counts of attempted murder at Manchester Crown Court on Monday. She was also found guilty of two counts of causing or allowing the death of a child.

The court heard that Letby harmed babies in her care on the neonatal ward at the Countess of Chester Hospital between 2015 and 2016. She injected air into their blood and stomachs, overfed them with milk, physically assaulted them and poisoned them with insulin.

Police found a trove of handwritten notes while searching Letby's house during their investigation. One note read: "I am evil I did this."

Prosecutors argued that Letby's intention was to kill the babies while duping her colleagues into believing there was a natural cause of death.

"She perverted her learning and weaponised her craft to inflict harm, grief and death," said Pascale Jones of the Crown Prosecution Service.

Victims' families

The families of the victims said they "may never truly know why this happened."

"To lose a baby is a heartbreaking experience that no parent should ever have to go through," a joint statement said.

"But to lose a baby or to have a baby harmed in these particular circumstances is unimaginable."

The statement added: "Justice has been served and the nurse who should have been caring for our babies has been found guilty of harming them.

"But this justice will not take away from the extreme hurt, anger and distress that we have all had to experience.

"We are heartbroken, devastated, angry and feel numb."

Sentence

Letby will be sentenced at Manchester Crown Court on August 21. She faces a life sentence.

Additional Information:

  • Letby was arrested in 2018 and charged with murder in 2020.
  • She has been in custody since her arrest.
  • The trial lasted for 12 weeks.
  • Letby did not give evidence in her defence.
  • The judge, Mr Justice Nicholas Dean, said he would sentence Letby on August 21.

The case has raised questions about the safety of hospitals and the need for better monitoring of nurses. It has also led to calls for a public inquiry into the deaths of the babies.
